Hey, you beautiful people welcome back to my world, I hope you are doing well and am sending a lot of hugs and positivity to all of you.
Today’s blog post is pretty interesting and technical.
It’s a topic that is discussed a lot, and a huge debate goes on as to which one is practical.
So, sit back and relax as we’ll go through the post and we’ll learn about these two distinctions of smartness.
Introduction:-
Smartness is comprised of two types:-
Book Smart.
Street Smart.
Book Smart:-
Is an intelligent individual, and well educated academically.
They are the ones who follow a set of rules and get A’s in academics.
But at the same time, they are less knowledgeable and capable when it comes to handling important or immediate decisions in practical situations common to everyday life or the streets.
And fail to put learning into practice. So, summarizing book smarts are:-
Knowledge gained from books.
Well-educated.
Follow a set of rules.
Structure things.
Deals situation from an intellectual perspective.
Have poor judgment in challenging situations.
Street Smart:-
They are the opposite.
Street smarts are a type of personality that doesn’t rely on learning from books and scoring A’s in academics, but they are the ones that believe in learning from real-life experiences.
They are the ones who come up with solutions that are practical rather than talking about it in theory.
By summarizing it, street smarts are:-
Risk takers and belief in experimenting.
They survive from real-life experience.
Fail and retry.
Learn from failures.
Emphasize ‘how’, rather than ‘why’ or ‘what’.
Assess the environment they live in.
The distinction between the two:-
Well, the world of intelligence is dipole as the real world operates differently as compared to the academic world.
It depends on how you deal with real-life problems.
How good you are at solving problems?
Since the world is changing like never before due to the rise of technology and the internet creating a plethora of opportunities and is a solution to many problems.
But I have this feeling that street smarts kick book smarts as it means that you have the instinct or sense of situational awareness.
You can access the environment and what the available angles are.
Being on a street requires you to learn by observing things, believing in your instincts, and most importantly trusting your judgment about people and what matters.
People who are street smarts are unintelligent and incapable of achieving higher education but are more passionate about their work, and can usually find answers to the solutions by using trial and error methods.
The prime distinction between book smart and street smart is who is at the center of the knowledge. On the streets, it’s you.
Whereas, in a book, you are trying to absorb someone else’s take on life.
No matter how good the writer but there’s still a lack of practical experience or exposure.
The truth is the real world doesn’t work on theory you need to be practical and get the work done.
High IQ doesn’t mean that you know everything and don’t take projects then you are unlikely to succeed in a big corporate or the start-up world.
EQ matters more than IQ cause emotions are what drive you.
I feel having a combination of book smart and street smart is just amazing.
One such example that struck me is from the film The Big Short, Michael Burry(played by Christian Bale)
One of the best characters in the film, while watching the film I realized that he not only reads a lot of books but at the same time implements the idea in practical life. That’s how he tracked the market.
My younger brother is a prime example as he hates studying and was never good at academics.
He’s a pure street smart who believes in solving problems practically by being on the streets as in just doing it.
I think having a combo of both works. That’s what I wanna be a book smart plus a street smart.
If you have the flair for reading so implement it in real life and that’s where the fun is. This is how you’ll learn. A deadly combo.
Don’t just read and forget it the next day, absorb it. Use the power of book knowledge in the real world. Not only you’ll make money but at the same time, it’ll improve lives.
A better version of yourself.
So, read books, implement the knowledge, and share it.
