I always used to think that if you want to progress in life you need to have a high IQ, solving math equations, problem-solving, scoring good marks in exams, basically being good in academics. But then my perspective changed towards it as my teacher who teaches me CFA said it’s the IQ that matters, what really matters is having a high EQ(Emotional Quotient/Emotional intelligence). So,
What is Emotional Quotient/Emotional Intelligence?
Well, basically Emotional Quotient/Emotional Intelligence is the ability to manage and analyze your emotions or other individual’s emotions too.
EQ plays an important role as it really matters more than IQ. I had a long hour of discussion with my sir about this topic and I was really fascinated with it. Yes having a high IQ helps you to solve high fundamental problems and have complete knowledge about a particular field but that doesn’t mean that he/she is right all the time. Even you can go wrong and what if you go wrong so how will you face the problem that matters a lot?
Whereas having a high EQ matters if you have a high EQ then you can face that problem with ease and can solve it. It also helps in managing stress and it also helps in managing relationships with other individuals. Having a high EQ means that no matter what the problem is it will not affect you much. It means you are still and seeking solitude.
So as my sir who teaches me CFA has discussed since he had work experience at wall street before settling in India has said that in the field of finance there are people with high IQ who are Portfolio Managers handling a trillion-dollar asset management fund have bet against the market and invested in junky bonds and they couldn’t bear the loss as they couldn’t accept the fact that they can go wrong, whereas people with high EQ have the ability to bear the loss and accepting the fact that even they can go wrong because their emotions were in control. It’s better to be wise.
I was really interested in this topic as it’s a really relevant topic in today’s time. I would recommend a book called Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goldman to know about it.
