There’s so much competition since many people are in this business:-
The Internet Business is tough. Easy to get started, but difficult to survive as the competition is fierce. There are so many people in this business especially, millennials. Many people want to make it big, as they all pump up egos and exciting ideas to get into it, and then realize that there are many people with similar ideas out there. This is because the internet is a huge place and a market, with no barriers, and that’s why it’s an awesome place or a market for people to start so that everyone can try it, and this is the reason why there’s so much of competition, it’s growing day by day. But at the same time, there’s also a positive side to it, since the internet is huge and transparent, you can have access to your competitor’s information and product details that can be helpful to you as you can rethink and again start over.
It’s very important to follow laws and have an accountant:-
Starting a business or freelancing is interesting and excited, but what we forget is the legal side of it. Hitting the legal reality is a shock for most internet entrepreneurs. That’s the reason why you need an accountant. Having an accountant is beneficial as it’ll help you a lot right from filing taxes to handling all the legal matters. But the most important step is having some knowledge about taxes, how much tax your state charges? Or How much tax the other state charges? It’s very important to know these things because that will help you in growing your business further not only in your state or country but in other states or countries too.
Work-life balance will change and so does cash flow:-
Being an entrepreneur is tough. It’s not like a regular corporate job where everything is fixed or constant, it varies a lot. Your routine completely changes when you start a business, you work for 12-15 hours a day, dedicating your entire life to it and so does the income, as I have said before it’s not a corporate job where your incomes are fixed, it’s altogether a different ball game. Owning a business or freelancing can put you at risk of having no income for a month or very low-income months. Some clients may not pay you, or you might even get scammed, so having money on a certain day in a month will be a past. But at the same time, you’ll deal with it, and learn a lot from these experiences. Working from home will be tiresome and exhausted, but you have to come up with a proper schedule so that you can have a steady work-life balance, and don’t let your work risk your life.
It’s all about learning constantly, developing new skills:-
No matter what you do in life, it’s all about learning. There’s a quote that I want to reside and here it goes,
“ People who learn constantly from books, experiences, courses, observations, and mistakes are the ones who grow and evolve.”
Isn’t it true? The internet is a huge network to learn a lot of things. Your skills need to be polished so that you know the current trends. As an online marketer, you should be able to use new tools that are there in the market, even your clients might need you to use the tools. Demands are changing with the rise of available new tools, and it’s important to adapt to new changes. Adapting to changes is important because that’s how you’ll grow and be aware of and reading news and applying for courses is a good way to learn and develop new skills.
You’ll have to say no to some clients or deals:-
Yes, at the beginning phase you say yes to clients, and it’s important to get the first-hand experience and build up your resume and portfolio. But it’s not all the time, at certain instances you have to say no. Before saying yes to a client you need to ask certain questions like,
Is the pay equal?
Can I give time to the project?
Is it interesting?
Is it a good brand fit for you?
If you find yourself answering no to these questions, don’t do it and politely say no.
Doing a little pro bono work from time to time is good advertising:-
So, what’s pro bono work?
A pro bono work or providing a service is nothing but working for free or at a lower cost. It’s a scary thing to start a business online or freelancing, but a learning experience. But once you become successful, it important to give back or help people who are embarking on the journey of business or freelancing. Conduct a pro bono consultant, help people who are starting by providing certain services for free or at a lower cost. The advantage of doing pro bono work is that it’ll help not only others but even help to get new clients and is a good way of marketing yourself.
You won’t get recognition immediately:-
As I have mentioned before it’s not an easy path. Don’t expect overnight success into your niche, it takes time. You have to work hard, keep on observing what your competitors are doing, keep on learning, constantly update your tools, update your skills and adapt to changes. According to Gary Vaynerchuk,
“People who care less about what other people think about them tend to have a better life it’s just liberating. I genuinely believe that self-esteem is the only drug in life.”
Working constantly on your niche, and knowing what you do, and constantly learning are what drive you to success.
It’s not a 9 to 5 kind of job:-
I’ll say this again and again, it’s not a corporate job. You have to kick your a**. You have to put the effort and time into building it. Being a freelancing social media manager or freelancing in copywriting for example is not the same as being a social media manager or a copywriting at an agency. If you are a freelancer, you need to track your time and make the most out of it. Sometimes you have to work for 12-15 hours a day, learn new skills constantly at the same time, and adapt to changes. You need to schedule yourself and work according to it. Learning to prioritize your tasks is something that you need to learn as it plays a very important role and has a big impact on your clients and the return on their investments. As a freelancer, you need to have soft skills and should be able to select a project and schedule and prioritize it.
